Restaurant Review: The Savoy – Rome, NY

We want to take a second to tell you about the Savoy restaurant. Do you miss the days where you could enjoy a man playing piano as you indulged in garlic bread? Well, what if we told you that you can still enjoy a night like that? Because you can!

The Savoy Restaurant in Rome, NY was established in 1908 by Michelina and Frank Destito. The restaurant has remained in the family since then and is currently in it’s third generation of ownership.

The Savoy is sure to promise a few things; good food, great ambiance, and lots of nostalgic charm. When you enter through the doors, you’ll see a long, old fashioned bar. Fully stocked with liquors, wines, and craft beers. The walls are covered floor to ceiling of old pictures and memorabilia. College flags line the entire dining room ceiling, you could spend the whole meal just looking for your alma mater!

Now let’s talk about the food. Before we say another word, we need to be clear about one thing: GARLIC BREAD. The Savoy has some of the best garlic bread we’ve ever had and it’s bottomless. They will keep bringing you garlic bread until you can’t possibly have another bite; it’s hard to not make a meal out of it.

The restaurant is a traditional Italian restaurant with everything from pasta, to steak, to seafood and we’ve yet to find a dish we don’t like. However, if you’re in town for one night let us narrow it down to two specialty dishes for you:

Chicken Riggies – This dish is native to the Utica-Rome area. That’s right, this dish was literally discovered in the Savoy’s backyard so it’s kind of a no brainer why we’re promoting it. It features chicken, peppers, mushrooms, and onions tossed with rigatoni and a spicy sauce. They’ll even let you pick your heat here!

Grandma Destito’s Famous Lasagna – If they’ve been making a dish since 1908, they’ve got to be doing something right, right? Layers of noodles, ground beef, sausage, ricotta, mozzarella, and tomato sauce this is your traditional lasagna, OH with Grandma’s secret seasonings of course.

Outside the have a large patio that can hold around 150 people and is great for parties. In the summer they have Party on the Patio from 5:30-8:30PM where local musicians perform, and they feature their special patio menu.

Hosting an event? Throw the party there in one of their private rooms or have them cater and come to you! Either way, your guests will be sure to enjoy the food.
